FinePrint Support FAQs

How do I fix missing characters when printing PDF files to FinePrint?

Click the Options button in the FinePrint preview and select the "PDF font correction" item.

Why do watermarks print in black or not at all?

On some printers, colored text is drawn either in black text or not at all. If your printer does this, click the options button on the FinePrint dialog box and select the "color correction" option in the "colored text" combo box.
See Feature Tour >>

Can I change the size of fonts?

Font sizes are limited by the amount of free margin. You can reduce the amount of margin in the Margin control by setting it to "none". If you are using a browser, you can turn off the printing of the URL in the Page Setup dialog box in your browser. This may help increase the amount of available margin.

Why are the top and bottom margins so big in booklet and 2 up mode?

This is due to the difference in aspect ratio between a full sheet of letter paper and a half sheet. A half sheet of letter paper is taller with respect to its width than a full size sheet. This leads to more space vertically. To get around the problem, you can use the "FinePrint 2up letter" size paper which can be selected in either the FinePrint Properties or in the Page Setup of your application if FinePrint is the selected printer.

Why are my printouts cut off on the right hand side when printing web pages?

This problem can usually be fixed by reducing the margins from the Page Setup dialog box of your browser.

How do I run FinePrint?

FinePrint is a printer driver and is selected as the printer from your application.

Why do I experience slow printing when using FinePrint?

Try uninstalling all printers and then reinstalling them, testing with FinePrint after each installation. This should solve the problem.

How do I prevent FinePrint from scaling when not in Bypass mode?

Set the FinePrint margin control in the Layout tab to "original" to prevent scaling.

Can I download the older FinePrint 2000?

You can download FinePrint 2000 at:
FinePrint 2000 for Windows 9x/Me
FinePrint 2000 for Windows NT/2000/XP
FinePrint 2000 Enterprise

How do I fix double-sided and booklet printing problems?

Problem: On duplex printers, pages print upside down and on the backside of the paper.
Solution: Check the "landscape/portrait produces vertical flipping" box in the Options dialog.

Problem: The pages are correct but I have to re-order them manually when the booklet is finished printing.
Solution: check the "print pages in reverse" option in the Options dialog. You should only need to do this if you are using an inkjet or other printer where the pages must be re-ordered the when the printing process is completed.

If your pages are printed without reordering when not using FinePrint, do not use the reverse pages option. Once this is corrected, try toggling the flip pages option the manual duplex area.

Problem: When doing manual duplex, the backsides of the sheets do not have the correct pages.
Solution: Try toggling the "print pages in reverse" option and try again. Use a 4 page document to experiment.

Why are my pages in the wrong order in the preview, such as page 2 followed by page 1?

This is a vestige of days before FinePrint where you checked the Reverse box on the Word print dialog box. With FinePrint there is no need for that so uncheck it.

Does FinePrint support DOS printing?

For DOS applications, you need to capture the screen output to a file using the ">" operator and then print the resulting file with a Windows application in order to use FinePrint.

Why are my landscape pages not rotated?

Try using one of the page rotation options in the Options dialog box in the FinePrint window.
See Feature Tour >

How do I get statistics on the amount of paper I am saving with FinePrint?

Click the Information tab on the FinePrint dialog. At the bottom of the window you will see the statistics.

How can I make A4 the default paper size?

Win 2K/XP: In the Printers folder, right-click on the FinePrint Driver and select "Printing preferences". Select A4 in the Paper Size list box.

Win9x: In the Printers folder, right-click on the FinePrint Driver and select "Properties", then the Setup tab. Select A4 in the Paper Size list box.

Why do my stationery items reappear after I have deleted them?

The default stationeries keep reappearing because they are refreshed from the system stationery file. If you delete this file then the stationeries will not reappear. In FinePrint, the system stationery file is located in
\windows\system\fp5.sta (Windows 9x) or
\winnt\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\2\fp5.sta (Windows NT/2000).

How do I disable the display of the FinePrint dialog box?

The FinePrint dialog box display modes can be set by using the FinePrint Preferences in the Windows printers folder. This dialog box is available from most applications in the same place from which the printer driver is selected.
See Feature Tour>>

Can FinePrint scale one paper size to another?

Yes. Suppose you want to print an 11x17 document on letter size paper or print an A3 document on A4 paper. In your application, set the paper size to the original (11x17 or A3 in this case). In the print dialog box in your application, select the FinePrint driver and click the properties button. Set the paper size to A3. Print to FinePrint.

When the FinePrint dialog appears, click the Options button and then the Custom Settings button. Set the paper size to the new size for the printer selected in FinePrint (letter or A4 in this case). Proceed to print in FinePrint using the OK or Print buttons at the bottom of the FinePrint Window.

How do I uninstall?

Go to the Add/Remove programs icon in the Control Panel and remove it from there.

Why are there missing spaces in my FinePrint documents?

Sometimes printouts from FinePrint have incorrect text spacing. The most common problem is words running into each other, i.e. insufficient spacing between words. This usually happens when there is a change in font or font attribute (e.g. Arial changing to Times New Roman, changing to or from underline, changing to or from italics).

Most of these problems are not inherent to FinePrint but are bugs in the destination printer driver. You can work around these problems by configuring your destination printer to print TrueType fonts as graphics.

To do this:

  • print your document to FinePrint
  • in the FinePrint dialog, select your destination printer and click the Options button
  • in the Printer Options dialog, click the Properties button to bring up the destination printer's Properties dialog
  • navigate the destination printer's Properties dialog until you find the TrueType font option. For most HP drivers, this is in the Fonts tab. Set this option to "Print TrueType fonts as graphics".
  • click OK to accept the change and return to FinePrint.

If the destination printer driver does not have this option, or if setting it does not clear up the problem, then you should contact FinePrint Technical Support at support@fineprint.com for problem resolution. Please attach a copy of the document which you are printing, simplified as much as possible, so that we can attempt to reproduce the problem. If you are printing from the Web then just send us the URL.

Text spacing problems can be highly dependent on FinePrint settings like the N-up layout, margins, destination printer, and the paper sizes of your source document and of the destination printer. You can try changing one or more of these settings and see if it affects the text spacing problem.

How do I install FinePrint using the Add Printer Wizard?
